What Jesus said about Decision-Making & Wisdom

Jesus on wisdom and choices: the narrow gate, building on the rock, counting the cost, being wise as serpents and harmless as doves, and not serving two masters.

  1. Judgment should be righteous rather than based on appearances.

    Read the Scripture John 7:24

    King James Version

    John 7:24

24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

  2. No one can serve both God and money.

Read the Scripture Matthew 6:24; Luke 16:13

    King James Version

    Matthew 6:24

24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

    Luke 16:13

13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

  3. Discernment is still required; do not give sacred things to those who will only trample them.

    Read the Scripture Matthew 7:6

    King James Version

    Matthew 7:6

6Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

  4. Enter through the narrow gate rather than the broad road to destruction.

Read the Scripture Matthew 7:13–14; Luke 13:24

    King James Version

    Matthew 7:13–14

13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

    Luke 13:24

24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.

  5. Present moral choices can have irreversible postmortem consequences.

    Read the Scripture Luke 16:26

    King James Version

    Luke 16:26

26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

  6. Do not begin following Jesus while constantly looking back.

    Read the Scripture Luke 9:61–62

    King James Version

    Luke 9:61–62

61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

  7. Count the cost of discipleship.

    Read the Scripture Luke 14:25–35

    King James Version

    Luke 14:25–35

25And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

33So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

  8. Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

    Read the Scripture Matthew 10:16

    King James Version

    Matthew 10:16

16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

  9. The wise and foolish builders teach that hearing Jesus without obedience is ruinous, while obedience gives stability.

Read the Scripture Matthew 7:24–27; Luke 6:46–49

    King James Version

    Matthew 7:24–27

24Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

    Luke 6:46–49

46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

  10. The fig tree illustration teaches discernment of approaching fulfillment.

Read the Scripture Matthew 24:32–35; Mark 13:28–31; Luke 21:29–33

    King James Version

    Matthew 24:32–35

32Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

    Mark 13:28–31

28Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:

29So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.

30Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

31Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

    Luke 21:29–33

    29And he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

30When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand.

31So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

32Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

33Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

  11. The rich fool teaches that material abundance without readiness before God is folly.

    Read the Scripture Luke 12:16–21

    King James Version

    Luke 12:16–21

16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.

19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

  12. The tower builder teaches counting the cost before claiming discipleship.

    Read the Scripture Luke 14:28–30

    King James Version

    Luke 14:28–30

28For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

  13. The king considering war teaches sober calculation of the cost of discipleship.

    King James Version

    Luke 14:31–32

32Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
